Perplexity was early to the AI advertising game. Then it did something unexpected: It walked away.

After experimenting with ads beginning in 2024, Perplexity phased them out and confirmed in February 2026 that it wasn’t pursuing advertising as a revenue stream. The reason? In an AI search experience built around delivering trustworthy answers, ads created a trust problem the company wasn’t convinced it could solve.

So, does Perplexity show ads in 2026? No. And for marketers, that means getting seen on Perplexity now depends much more on AI visibility than paid placement.

Here’s what happened, how Perplexity ads worked and what brands can do instead.

What Is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity is an AI-powered search engine that combines conversational AI with web search. Instead of presenting a page of blue links in response to a query, it generates an answer and cites sources users can follow for more information.

That puts it somewhere between traditional search and tools like ChatGPT. You ask a question, Perplexity searches for relevant information and generates a synthesized response, often with follow-up questions that let you continue exploring the topic.

This answer-first approach is also what made advertising complicated.

Google users have spent decades seeing ads alongside organic results. But when an AI tool generates what appears to be one synthesized answer, introducing paid influence can raise a different question: Am I seeing this because it’s the best answer or because somebody paid to be here?

Perplexity decided that question mattered.

Does Perplexity Show Ads?

Not anymore.

Perplexity began testing advertising in the U.S. in November 2024, making it one of the earlier generative AI companies to experiment with an ad-supported model. The company eventually phased out the program before confirming in February 2026 that it had no plans to continue pursuing advertising.

Here’s a brief timeline of Perplexity’s ad program:

DateWhat Happened
July 2024Perplexity announced a publisher program designed to share revenue with participating publishers.
November 2024Perplexity began testing ads, including sponsored follow-up questions.
2024-2025Brands and agency partners experimented with the new ad formats.
August 2025Advertising and shopping lead Taz Patel left Perplexity.
Late 2025Perplexity phased out its sponsored content.
February 2026Executives confirmed the company was moving away from advertising and focusing on subscriptions.

The experiment didn’t necessarily prove that advertising and AI search can’t coexist. It showed that Perplexity didn’t think ads fit the particular product and business model it wanted to build. That distinction is becoming more interesting as other AI companies make very different choices.

How Perplexity Ads Worked

Perplexity wasn’t simply dropping Google Ads-style text placements into its search results. Its initial ad format centered on sponsored follow-up questions.

For example, after someone searches for information about finding a job, they might see a sponsored question related to using a particular platform in their job search. These placements were labeled “sponsored,” with the resulting answer still generated by Perplexity rather than written directly by the advertiser.

Early brand and agency partners included Indeed, Whole Foods Market, Universal McCann and PMG. Perplexity said the program would also help create a revenue stream it could share with publisher partners.

That publisher connection mattered. AI search engines depend heavily on information created elsewhere on the web, and publishers have understandably had a few thoughts about watching their content become raw material for AI-generated answers.

Advertising offered one possible monetization model that could send some money back their way. But the ad business never became a major part of Perplexity’s operation. By 2025, the experiment remained limited, and the executive leading its advertising efforts, Taz Patel, departed after nine months.

The grand AI advertising experiment was looking increasingly like, well, an experiment.

Why Did Perplexity Shut Down Its Ad Platform?

One word: trust.

Perplexity’s product depends on users believing its answer is the best response it can provide based on the available information, but advertising complicates that relationship.

Company executives told the Financial Times that even clearly labeled ads could make users question whether commercial incentives were influencing what they saw. Perplexity therefore chose to emphasize subscriptions and enterprise products rather than building out an ad business. That’s an especially important issue for answer engines.

Traditional search has a relatively obvious division between paid and organic listings. An AI answer feels different. It’s synthesized, conversational and often delivered with a degree of authority. If users begin wondering whether advertisers shape the recommendation itself, the whole experience gets shakier. Perplexity ultimately decided the potential ad revenue wasn’t worth that trade-off.

That doesn’t mean advertising could never return. Reporting around the decision left open the possibility that Perplexity could reconsider someday. But as of 2026, there is no native Perplexity ad platform for marketers to buy into.

What’s the Perplexity Controversy?

Advertising hasn’t been the only place where Perplexity and publishers have had to figure out some boundaries. Like other AI companies, Perplexity has faced scrutiny over how it accesses, summarizes and surfaces publisher content. Those tensions have led to disputes over attribution, content use and the economics of AI search.

Perplexity attempted to address some of those concerns with its publisher program, which offered participating publishers a share of revenue when their content contributed to answers associated with monetization.

But legal tensions haven’t disappeared. In December 2025, The New York Times sued Perplexity, alleging copyright infringement related to the use and reproduction of its journalism.

The broader issue extends beyond one lawsuit: AI answer engines need high-quality information to produce useful responses, while the organizations creating that information need sustainable reasons to keep producing it.

Turns out rebuilding search comes with a few terms-and-conditions questions.

Perplexity vs. ChatGPT: Different Approaches to Advertising

Here’s where the story gets particularly interesting. Perplexity stepped away from ads just as ChatGPT started embracing them.

OpenAI began testing ChatGPT Ads in the U.S. in February 2026 and has since expanded the program into additional markets. Ads appear separately below ChatGPT responses, are clearly labeled and don’t influence the answers generated by ChatGPT, according to OpenAI.

And this is no longer a tiny experiment. OpenAI now offers a self-service Ads Manager, CPC and CPM buying options and campaign measurement for advertisers.

The contrast is pretty stark:

Perplexity has moved away from advertising altogether, focusing primarily on subscriptions and enterprise products. Its experiment used sponsored follow-up questions, but brands can no longer buy placements through a native Perplexity ad platform.

ChatGPT, meanwhile, has moved in the opposite direction. OpenAI now supports advertising alongside subscriptions, enterprise products and APIs. Its sponsored placements appear separately from ChatGPT’s answers, with the goal of keeping advertising distinct from the information users receive.

In other words, both companies faced the same challenge: How do you introduce advertising without undermining trust in an AI-generated answer? Perplexity’s answer was to remove the ads. OpenAI’s has been to keep the ads separate from the answers.

OpenAI’s approach essentially argues that advertising and trustworthy AI can coexist if the boundary between the answer and the ad remains clear. Perplexity has reached a different conclusion: Removing that commercial layer altogether better supports its product.

Same monetization problem. Very different answers.

And then there’s Google, which comes to the AI search advertising question with several decades of ad business already attached. Google has integrated advertising into AI-powered search experiences including AI Overviews and AI Mode, making the competitive landscape even more varied.

For marketers, the lesson is pretty simple: There isn’t one AI advertising model yet. Everyone is still figuring this out.

How To Get Visibility on Perplexity Without Ads

If you can’t buy your way into Perplexity, how does your brand show up? By becoming a source worth citing.

Perplexity’s answers rely on information it can discover and retrieve from the web. That makes traditional SEO fundamentals important, but it also increases the value of generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO).

Some practical steps include:

  • Create authoritative content: Publish genuinely useful resources that answer specific questions clearly and comprehensively.
  • Build topical tuthority: Develop depth around the subjects you want your brand associated with rather than publishing isolated articles on unrelated keywords.
  • Earn credible mentions: Third-party references and coverage can strengthen your broader digital authority.
  • Make information easy to extract: Clear headings, direct answers, useful definitions and well-structured content help both people and AI systems understand what you’re saying.
  • Use credible sources: Support claims with reliable evidence and original research whenever possible.
  • Keep doing good SEO: Technical health, internal linking, crawlability and strong content aren’t suddenly irrelevant because an AI model entered the chat.

In other words, marketers have moved from asking, “How do we rank in Google?” to also asking, “How do we become part of the answer?”

That’s the basic idea behind generative engine optimization, and on Perplexity, where there’s currently no paid shortcut, earning that visibility matters even more.

Frequently Asked Questions About Perplexity Ads

Does Perplexity Show Ads?

No. Perplexity phased out its advertising experiment and confirmed in February 2026 that it wasn’t continuing to pursue ads as a revenue stream.

Why Was Perplexity Advertising?

Perplexity began experimenting with ads in 2024 as another potential revenue stream and a way to generate revenue that could be shared with publisher partners. Its ads included sponsored follow-up questions.

How Much Did Perplexity Ads Cost?

Perplexity’s advertising program remained a limited experiment rather than becoming a mature, self-service ad platform comparable to Google Ads. Pricing was therefore less standardized and publicly accessible than marketers may expect from established advertising platforms.

Why Were Perplexity Ads Discontinued?

Perplexity executives said advertising could undermine trust by making users question whether the answers they received were influenced by commercial considerations. The company instead shifted its monetization focus toward subscriptions and enterprise offerings.

Are Perplexity Ads Coming Back?

There are currently no announced plans to restore Perplexity ads. However, the company hasn’t ruled out advertising forever, so that could change as AI search business models continue to evolve.

Can Brands Advertise on Perplexity Today?

Not through a native Perplexity advertising program. Brands that want visibility in Perplexity should instead focus on organic AI visibility, SEO, GEO, authoritative content and earning citations.

The Future of Advertising on AI Search Platforms

Perplexity’s retreat from ads doesn’t mean AI advertising is dead. Quite the opposite! ChatGPT is expanding its advertising business, Google continues experimenting with ads across AI-powered search and marketers are gaining entirely new places to reach audiences.

What Perplexity demonstrates is that advertising isn’t the only way an AI search product can monetize – and every platform has to decide how much commercial influence its users will accept before trust starts to wobble.

For brands, that makes a diversified approach increasingly important. Paid AI placements may become another useful channel. But they’re unlikely to replace the value of being the company AI systems discover, trust and cite organically.

Perplexity took away the ad slot. Now you have to earn your way into the answer.
