First came search ads. Then social ads. Then ads followed us into streaming, podcasts, retail media and just about every other corner of the internet.
Now they’re in the chat. (ChatGPT, that is.)
ChatGPT ads give marketers a new way to reach people while they’re actively researching, comparing and making decisions inside a conversational AI platform. And that context makes them a little different from the display ad that’s been politely stalking you across the internet since you looked at one pair of shoes three days ago.
But we’re still early.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. in February 2026 and has continued expanding the program, its advertising tools and its geographic reach. That means marketers have a potentially valuable new channel, but not years of benchmarks, established playbooks or predictable performance data to fall back on.
So, what are ChatGPT ads? How do they work? And should you be handing them part of your media budget just yet?
Let’s find out.

Does ChatGPT Have Ads?
Yep. OpenAI began testing advertising in ChatGPT with logged-in adult users on its Free and Go tiers. Ads may now appear for users on those plans, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain ad-free. Accounts identified as belonging to people under 18 don’t receive ads.
The important distinction is where those ads live.
ChatGPT ads appear below responses, clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separate from the AI-generated answer. Advertising doesn’t influence ChatGPT’s responses, and a sponsored placement doesn’t mean OpenAI endorses the advertiser.
In other words, brands can pay for ad placements, but they can’t pay ChatGPT to suddenly decide that their software is the greatest invention since sliced bread. That separation — what OpenAI calls answer independence — is central to how advertising in ChatGPT works.
What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT ads are paid placements designed to connect relevant advertisers with users based on what they’re trying to accomplish in ChatGPT. And that’s what makes them interesting.
Traditional display advertising often tries to grab someone’s attention while they’re doing something else. A person reads an article, watches a video or checks the weather and — hello! — here’s an ad. A conversational interface starts somewhere different: the user tells the AI what they want.
Someone might be researching accounting software, comparing vacation destinations, looking for furniture or figuring out what equipment they need for a new hobby, and that’s potentially valuable context for advertisers.
How ChatGPT Advertising Is Different
A few characteristics separate ChatGPT ads from the traditional display model:
- They’re contextual: Ad selection can consider the topic and intent of the current conversation.
- They appear after answers: Sponsored placements are visually separate from ChatGPT’s response.
- They can reach high-intent moments: Users may be actively researching, comparing or deciding.
- They’re conversationally relevant: The goal is to match advertising with what someone is already trying to accomplish.
That last point is important because nobody opened ChatGPT to see an ad. The opportunity is to make the ad useful enough that it feels relevant to the conversation rather than like someone barged into it holding a billboard.
Why Did OpenAI Introduce Advertising?
There’s a fairly straightforward answer: Running AI at an enormous scale isn’t cheap.
OpenAI says advertising helps support broader access to ChatGPT and continued investment in its Free and lower-cost Go plans. The company has also established principles around answer independence, conversation privacy and user choice and control.
For advertisers, meanwhile, it opens access to people at potentially valuable moments in the customer journey. As buyers increasingly use AI for vendor research and decision-making, those moments could become hard for marketers to ignore.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
This is where things get interesting for paid media teams.
OpenAI initially launched ChatGPT ads with a small group of advertisers before introducing partner buying and a beta self-serve Ads Manager. Advertisers can now create campaigns, manage targeting and review performance through that platform.
What Do ChatGPT Ads Look Like?
Current ad units appear below ChatGPT responses and include:
- Advertiser name.
- Favicon or logo.
- Headline.
- Description.
- Landing page.
- Image creative.
They’re clearly labeled as sponsored rather than woven into the organic answer. So, no, your ad copy isn’t secretly sneaking into ChatGPT’s response wearing a fake mustache.
It’s still an ad.
How Are ChatGPT Ads Triggered?
Here’s where conversational AI changes the targeting equation. OpenAI’s ad system considers multiple signals when selecting eligible ads, including the context and intent of the current conversation, along with information from the ad itself, such as its landing page, headline and copy.
Advertisers can also provide context hints describing topics, conversations or keywords where their offering may be relevant. These aren’t traditional exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee placement in a particular conversation.
With ad personalization enabled, additional signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience may also contribute to ad relevance.
Importantly, advertisers don’t receive users‘ chats, chat histories, memories or personal details. They receive aggregated performance information such as views and clicks. OpenAI also restricts ad placement around sensitive user contexts and brand-unsafe topics.
Contextual targeting, yes. Reading someone’s private conversations from your ads dashboard? Very much no.
How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?
ChatGPT Ads currently supports two primary buying options:
- Reach: Uses CPM (cost per thousand impressions) pricing and optimizes for impressions.
- Clicks: Uses CPC (cost per click) pricing and optimizes for valid clicks.
With CPM, or cost per thousand impressions, advertisers pay based on every 1,000 impressions. With CPC, or cost-per-click, advertisers pay for valid clicks.
Advertisers set maximum bids at the ad-group level. OpenAI currently recommends starting CPC campaigns with a maximum bid of around $3-$5 per click, although actual costs and competitiveness can vary. Ads are selected through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
That makes ChatGPT advertising a little more familiar to anyone who’s spent time inside Google Ads.
But don’t rush to benchmark the two as though they’re interchangeable. Google Ads has decades of campaign data, established search behavior and mature optimization tools behind it. ChatGPT advertising is still finding its feet.
And its biggest differentiator may ultimately be the context in which those ads appear.
The Opportunity for Marketers
Why all the fuss over another advertising platform? Because conversational AI can capture something marketers really, really like: Intent.
People often come to an AI chatbot with a goal. They aren’t necessarily scrolling because they’re bored; they’re asking questions, comparing options and working through decisions, and that creates some intriguing marketing opportunities.
Less Noise, More Context
ChatGPT isn’t currently stuffed with sponsored placements.
For early advertisers, that may mean:
- Less ad saturation than mature channels.
- Access to users actively researching decisions.
- A chance to learn conversational targeting early.
- New data about which contexts drive engagement.
- An opportunity to build internal expertise before competition increases.
OpenAI has already expanded measurement beyond impressions and clicks with Conversions API and pixel-based measurement for actions such as purchases, leads and sign-ups. Ads Manager reporting can include impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions.
That’s starting to look like a real performance marketing channel.
But Keep the Champagne Corked
Early opportunity also means early uncertainty. ChatGPT ads don’t yet have the depth of historical benchmarks marketers have for Google Ads and other mature channels. Formats, targeting, measurement and buying models are also still evolving.
That means marketers should be prepared for:
- Limited historical performance data.
- Evolving average CPM and CPC benchmarks.
- Changing ad formats and capabilities.
- Brand suitability considerations.
- Measurement experimentation.
- A potentially steep learning curve.
Treat ChatGPT advertising as an experiment, not a replacement for your existing paid media strategy. You don’t need to move the entire Google Ads budget over because AI is shiny.
Who Should Leverage ChatGPT Ads Right Now, and How?
The best early candidates are likely brands whose customers naturally research and compare options before making a decision.
Depending on current advertiser eligibility and OpenAI’s ad policies, that could make ChatGPT ads particularly interesting for technology companies, SaaS brands, professional services and other businesses with educational or high-consideration buying journeys.
But success will require more than copying a Google ad into Ads Manager and calling it an AI strategy.
Write for the Conversation
The context is conversational. Your ad copy should acknowledge that.
Focus on:
- Answering or supporting the user’s immediate need.
- Communicating value quickly.
- Keeping messaging simple.
- Avoiding overly promotional language.
- Giving people a clear reason to continue exploring.
The principles of good writing still apply. Clear beats clever when clever gets in the way.
Design for Trust, Not Interruption
Your ad appears next to an experience people use to get information, so act accordingly. Creative should feel credible, polished and relevant to the user’s task rather than screaming BUY NOW!!! from underneath a thoughtful AI response.
There’s a time and place for digital jazz hands. This probably isn’t it.
Start Narrow and Learn
This is not the channel for setting 46 campaigns live on Friday afternoon and disappearing for the weekend. Start with focused use cases where conversational intent aligns closely with your offer.
Test context hints, creativity and bids. Then watch your:
- CPM and CPC.
- Click-through rate.
- Conversions.
- Downstream traffic quality.
- Performance across different conversational contexts.
Then, iterate as you learn, because the platform is doing the same thing.

What Types of Businesses Are Using ChatGPT Ads?
The program is still evolving, and advertiser eligibility varies. OpenAI’s current policies primarily support consumer categories such as lifestyle and household goods, local services, travel and experiences and digital products or education, while some regulated categories face additional restrictions or approval requirements.
Explore the AI Final Frontier
ChatGPT ads aren’t replacing Google Ads tomorrow — so everybody can put their pitchforks down.
What they do represent is something potentially much bigger than another rectangle of ad inventory: a chance to reach people while they’re actively asking questions, exploring options and making decisions inside a conversational interface.
That’s exciting! It’s also new.
Marketers don’t yet have years of average CPMs, click-through rates and conversion benchmarks telling them exactly what “good” looks like. And the platform itself is still evolving its formats, targeting, measurement and buying models.
So don’t approach ChatGPT ads expecting a fully mapped playbook. Approach them as a chance to help write one. Test carefully. Learn what conversational intent means for your brand. Figure out which messages earn attention without interrupting the experience.
Because if conversational AI becomes a major part of how people discover and evaluate brands, the marketers who start learning now won’t be starting from zero later.
