Yahoo! has revealed figures showing that its news website attracted the biggest single-day online news audience ever on the day of polling for the US elections.

According to statistics from comScore, 7.6 million unique users visited Yahoo! News on November 4th, with almost 260 million total page views recorded.

Meanwhile, MSNBC saw 6.8 million unique users, while had 6.3 million, AOL News attracted 2.5 million and had 1.9 million visitors.

Other figures from Yahoo! showed that election-related search queries on Yahoo! rose by 780 percent on November 4th compared with the previous day and ‚elections‘ became the most queried term in a 24-hour period.

"Yahoo! has established itself as the first place consumers turn to online for major events and the 2008 presidential election was no exception," remarked Neeraj Khemlani, vice-president and general manager of Yahoo! News.

Other figures released by comScore last month showed that independent political blogs and news sites saw significant increases in traffic during the 12 months to September as a result of the elections.
