Google increased its market share to 71.01 percent of all US searches over the four weeks ending August 28th and continued to be the "primary way" web users navigate key industry categories, according to web resource Hitwise.

The digital sector analyst explains this was followed by Yahoo! Search, which received 18.26 percent during the month-long period.

MSN Search and Ask.com took third and fourth places, accounting for 5.32 percent and 3.45 percent of the market respectively.

The remaining 46 search engines analyzed by Hitwise during August collectively received 1.95 percent.

"Comparing August 2008 to August 2007, entertainment, business and finance, sports, online video and social networking categories showed double digit increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines," the site notes.

In recent days, Google announced in its official blog that it intends to work with newspaper publishers in order to digitize millions of pages of news archives.
